The Beauty of Slow Life: Hotel Villa Ducale's Vision on Modern Wellness and Quiet Luxury

As wellness travel continues to evolve, today's travellers are seeking something far more meaningful than lavish spas or packed itineraries. They crave stillness, authentic connections, restorative landscapes and experiences that encourage them to slow down, reconnect and simply be present. Perched high above the picturesque town of Taormina with sweeping views of Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea, Hotel Villa Ducale embodies this new era of luxury, where wellbeing is woven into every moment rather than confined to a treatment room.

In this exclusive interview, Gaia Quartucci, Sales & Marketing Director at QRA Hospitality, shares how Hotel Villa Ducale embraces the Sicilian philosophy of vita lenta, why silence and simplicity have become today's greatest luxuries, and how boutique hospitality is helping shape the future of wellness travel through deeply personal, soulful experiences.

Many people travel today not just to explore, but to recharge. How does Hotel Villa Ducale create an environment where guests can truly slow down, switch off and reconnect with themselves?

At Hotel Villa Ducale, we believe that true recharging doesn't come from a schedule of activities, but from the luxury of empty time. Because we are a boutique property, located in the most peaceful area of Taormina, we can protect an atmosphere of profound quiet. We encourage guests to switch off by intentionally keeping the environment serene—there is no rush here. Whether it is sitting on our panoramic terrace with a book, listening to the silence of the morning high above the bustling streets of Taormina, or enjoying a glass of Etna wine at sunset, every corner is designed to act as a natural decompression chamber from the fast pace of modern life.

Sicily is often associated with long lunches, fresh local ingredients, time spent outdoors and a slower pace of life. What aspects of the Sicilian lifestyle do you believe naturally support wellbeing, and how do you weave these into the guest experience?

The core of Sicilian wellbeing lies in the concept of vita lenta—slow life—and an innate connection to the land. Here, nature dictates the rhythm, and we naturally embrace a slower, more sensory way of living. We weave this into the guest experience starting with our breakfast, which is a celebration of local ritual: homemade baked goods, freshly picked citrus fruits, and artisanal cakes eaten without any rush. We encourage our guests to embrace the local art of doing nothing (il dolce far niente), spending mornings under the Mediterranean sun by our panoramic infinity pool, taking deep breaths of the sea breeze, and letting the day unfold organically.

How do you define wellness at QRA Hospitality, and what does that philosophy look like across your hotels, particularly at Villa Ducale?

At QRA Hospitality, we define wellness not as a transactional spa treatment or a high-tech facility, but as an emotional state of harmony. It is about how a place makes you feel. Across our hotels, this philosophy translates into creating an authentic sense of home, where luxury is warm, welcoming, and deeply human. At Hotel Villa Ducale specifically, wellness looks like intimacy and restorative peace. It is found in the tactile comfort of natural materials, the soft morning light filtering through the windows, and the genuine, intuitive care of our team, who ensure that every guest feels completely looked after and free from any stress.

Running a luxury hospitality group can be incredibly demanding. What daily rituals or habits help you stay grounded and maintain balance?

To stay grounded amidst the fast-paced demands of managing multiple luxury properties, I rely heavily on consistency and physical discipline. My most non-negotiable ritual is my fitness routine; I train in the weight room four times a week. It is a dedicated space where I can completely channel my energy, clear my mind, and build physical strength, which directly translates into mental resilience. Living in Taormina also allows me to easily connect with nature, so taking a few quiet moments to look out at the sea before the workday starts is essential for keeping me balanced and focused on what truly matters.

How has your definition of luxury changed over the years? Do you think true luxury today is more about experiences and wellbeing than material things?

Absolutely. Luxury has undergone a beautiful evolution. Years ago, it was heavily defined by opulence, marble, and rigid, formal service. Today, true luxury is entirely invisible: it is time, privacy, silence, and peace of mind. High-net-worth travelers already have access to beautiful material things; what they crave when they travel is a shift in perspective and an investment in their own wellbeing. True luxury today means being in a place that allows you to drop your guard, be completely present, and collect meaningful memories that stay with you long after you check out.

Perched above Taormina with breathtaking views of Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea, Hotel Villa Ducale has an extraordinary setting. How important is the surrounding landscape in helping guests feel calmer, more present and restored during their stay?

The landscape is arguably our greatest wellness asset. There is something profoundly grounding about looking at Mount Etna—a living, breathing mountain—juxtaposed against the absolute stillness of the Ionian Sea. Being perched high above Taormina gives guests a sense of perspective; it feels like being suspended between the sky and the sea, safely removed from the noise below. We have designed our spaces, terraces, and pool area to ensure that this view is always the protagonist. Watching the changing colors of the sky over the volcano naturally forces you to slow down your breathing, anchor yourself in the present moment, and feel restored.

We're seeing more travellers embrace slower, more intentional holidays. Have you noticed a shift in what guests are looking for, and how has Hotel Villa Ducale adapted to meet this growing demand for meaningful travel experiences?

Yes, we have definitely noticed a significant shift toward slow, intentional travel. Guests are staying longer and looking for depth rather than just ticking off tourist highlights. They want to understand the soul of the destination. Hotel Villa Ducale has adapted by curating experiences that connect guests to the local culture in a quiet, unhurried way. Instead of packed itineraries, we guide them toward hidden corners, private boat excursions at sunset, or simple, authentic encounters that feel personal and exclusive, allowing them to travel with intention.

Food is such an important part of both Sicilian culture and wellbeing. How does your culinary philosophy celebrate local, seasonal ingredients while encouraging guests to enjoy food as an experience rather than simply a meal?

In Sicily, food is love, memory, and connection. Our culinary philosophy is entirely market-to-table; we use fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced from local producers who share our passion for quality. But beyond the ingredients, we want dining to be an emotional experience. At Hotel Villa Ducale, dinner is served on our candlelit panoramic al fresco restaurant Incanto, transforming a meal into a sensory journey. We encourage guests to pair our traditional dishes with local Etna wines, to ask our team about the stories behind the recipes, and to let dinner become an evening-long ritual of conversation, laughter, and relaxation.

Today's travellers are increasingly looking for destinations that support both physical and mental wellbeing. How do you see boutique hotels like Villa Ducale playing a role in the future of wellness travel?

I believe independent boutique hotels are the absolute future of wellness travel. Large-scale resorts can offer incredible facilities, but they often lack the soul, intimacy, and agility required to truly nurture a guest’s mental wellbeing. Properties like Hotel Villa Ducale excel because we offer highly personalized, human-centric luxury. We can notice the small details, adapt to an individual guest's emotional needs, and provide a genuine sense of sanctuary. The future of wellness travel isn't about escaping to a spa; it is about escaping to a places that feels like a soulful home, where your mind can finally rest.
