From Olympic Podiums to Rewriting the Rules of Fitness in Dubai
Three Olympics. A career-ending injury. A complete rebuild from zero. Sarah Lindsay learned early what elite sport teaches about discipline and consistency, and when she founded ROAR, she built those same principles into every session: expert coaching, real accountability, and a floor that never holds more than 12 people at a time. In this conversation, Sarah shares why strength training is non-negotiable for every goal, the misconceptions still holding women and men back in the gym, and what it takes to build a fitness experience for a city that expects excellence in everything.

1. You competed in three Olympics and trained up to nine hours a day for most of your life. When that chapter closed, how did you channel that athletic discipline into building ROAR and what did elite sport teach you about what people actually need from a fitness environment?
Elite sport teaches you very quickly that success isn't about motivation, it's about consistency, accountability and having the right people around you. When I retired, I realised those same principles were missing for most people walking into a gym. Too many fitness environments expect people to figure everything out for themselves. At ROAR, we wanted to recreate the support system that elite athletes have—expert coaching, structured programming, clear progression and a culture where everyone is invested in your success. People don't need endless equipment or the latest fitness trend. They need expert guidance, an environment where they feel comfortable, and a plan that delivers measurable results.
2. The Injury No One Talks About Behind the ROAR success story is a career-threatening injury that forced you to rebuild from scratch. How did that experience of starting over shape the way Roar approaches clients whether they're coming back from injury, burnout, or simply years of doing nothing?
That injury completely changed my perspective because it reminded me how frustrating it is when your body suddenly can't do what you expect it to. Rebuilding taught me patience and the importance of respecting the process rather than chasing shortcuts. Many of our clients arrive feeling like they're starting from zero, whether because of injury, pregnancy, illness, burnout or simply years away from exercise. We never judge where someone begins. Our role is to meet people where they are, rebuild confidence alongside strength, and create sustainable progress that lasts long after those first few weeks.
3. When you entered the industry after retiring, you quickly spotted that most gyms were failing people: in service, in environment, and in results. What specifically is still broken about the traditional gym model, and how did those frustrations become the blueprint for Roar?
The traditional gym model is built around membership numbers, not outcomes. Once you've signed up, you're often left to navigate hundreds of machines with very little guidance. That's one of the biggest reasons people lose confidence and eventually stop going. We built ROAR to completely reverse that model. Every member has expert coaching, personalised programming, regular progress tracking and genuine accountability. The goal isn't simply getting people through the door—it's making sure they actually achieve the results they're looking for.
4. More people, men and women, are moving away from crowded gyms and trend-driven boutique classes towards something more private and personalised. What's driving that shift, and how does ROAR's model of never more than 12 people on the floor at any time answer that need?
People are becoming much more intentional about where they invest their time and money. They don't want to spend an hour waiting for equipment or feeling like just another face in a crowded gym. They want expert attention, privacy and confidence that every session is moving them towards a goal. Limiting the gym floor to just 12 people allows our coaches to actually coach. It creates a calmer environment, better technique, stronger relationships and ultimately much better results because nobody slips through the cracks.
5. ROAR is known for delivering remarkable 12-week transformations across all body types and starting points. What are the non-negotiables of the Roar approach, the things that stay constant regardless of someone's age, gender, or goal and why do they work when so many other methods don't?
There are a few things we never compromise on. The first is strength training because maintaining muscle is fundamental for both performance and long-term health. The second is progressive programming where every client follows a structured plan that's continually adapted as they improve. The third is accountability because even the best programme won't work if you don't stick to it. Finally, we focus on education so clients understand why they're doing something instead of blindly following instructions. Those principles work whether someone wants to lose weight, improve athletic performance or simply stay healthy as they age.
6. There's still a widespread fear, particularly among women, that lifting weights means getting bulky, while many men jump straight to heavy lifting without the right foundation. How does ROAR address both of those misconceptions, and why is strength training the cornerstone of everything you do?
Strength training has probably been the most misunderstood area of fitness for decades. Women simply don't have the hormonal profile to suddenly become bulky through sensible resistance training. What they gain is strength, confidence, improved body composition and healthier bones. On the other hand, many men want to lift as heavy as possible before they've mastered movement, which often leads to injury. We teach everyone the same principle: movement quality comes before load. Strength training is the foundation because muscle supports everything—from metabolism and posture to longevity, injury prevention and maintaining independence as we get older.
7. From viral challenges to influencer workout plans, fitness content has never been louder or more confusing. How do you help clients, especially new ones, cut through what they've seen online and trust a process that's built on science rather than trends?
The biggest challenge today isn't lack of information—it's filtering the good from the bad. Social media rewards what's entertaining, not necessarily what's effective. We remind clients that the fundamentals of exercise haven't changed because of TikTok. Progressive overload, consistency, recovery, good nutrition and proper coaching still produce the best results. We explain the science behind what we do, measure progress objectively and encourage clients to judge success by how they feel and perform rather than whatever trend happens to be popular that week.
8. Dubai is a city of high performers, long hours, and big ambitions, but also one where people are increasingly searching for a fitness experience that matches the standard they expect in every other area of their life. What makes ROAR Dubai the answer to that, and what can someone expect from their very first consultation?
Dubai is one of the most ambitious cities in the world, and people expect excellence in every aspect of their lives—including their health. That's why premium fitness is thriving here. People don't want a generic membership; they want expertise, efficiency and measurable outcomes. From the very first consultation, we take time to understand someone's goals, medical history, lifestyle, previous training experience and any obstacles they've faced before. We assess movement, explain exactly how we'll help them achieve their goals and create a personalised roadmap. Our clients leave with clarity and confidence because they know they're not just joining another gym—they're investing in a coaching experience designed around them.
