Nova Maldives x PADI: The Luxury of Diving With Purpose
What if your next wellness escape took you beneath the surface? This September, Nova Maldives and PADI are turning ocean exploration into an opportunity for movement, mindfulness and meaningful connection.

Wellness travel is evolving. Increasingly, escaping to paradise isn't simply about lying beside a pool or booking a spa treatment. Travellers are looking for experiences that move the body, quiet the mind and leave them feeling connected to something bigger than themselves.
Few environments offer that combination quite like the ocean. This September, Nova Maldives is partnering once again with PADI for Project AWARE Week, running from 16–20 September 2026. The programme invites guests to explore the underwater world while taking part in marine conservation activities, creating a holiday experience where physical activity, nature and purpose come together.

The wellness benefits of going underwater
Diving and snorkelling are naturally active experiences. Swimming through open water engages the whole body, requiring strength, coordination and endurance, while the resistance of water provides a low-impact form of movement, but the benefits aren't purely physical.
Being underwater demands a certain level of presence. Divers must regulate their breathing, remain aware of their surroundings and move deliberately through an unfamiliar environment. That combination can create a remarkably meditative experience.

The rhythmic nature of breathing while diving can also encourage a sense of calm and focus, while being surrounded by marine life offers an opportunity to disconnect from screens, schedules and the constant stimulation of everyday life. In other words, the ocean can become a form of active mindfulness.
From ocean explorer to ocean advocate
Project AWARE Week takes that experience one step further by connecting exploration with conservation. Throughout the five-day programme, guests can participate in activities including Dive Against Debris, removing marine waste from the lagoon and logging findings into PADI AWARE's global database. For those who prefer to stay closer to the surface, guided whale shark snorkelling offers the chance to encounter these gentle giants in their natural environment.

Guests can also join excursions to spot manta rays and turtles, while coral restoration workshops provide an introduction to reef regeneration and the role healthy coral ecosystems play in supporting marine life.
There is a psychological benefit to purposeful travel, too. Rather than simply consuming an environment, conservation-focused experiences encourage travellers to become active participants in protecting it.
Nature as a mental reset
There is something uniquely restorative about spending time in nature, and the Maldivian setting offers an extraordinary backdrop for it. Nova sits within the South Ari Marine Protected Area, an area known for its year-round manta ray and whale shark sightings. Encounters with marine life can create a sense of awe, an emotion increasingly associated with perspective, connection and psychological wellbeing.

Away from the noise and demands of everyday life, watching a manta glide through the water or swimming alongside a whale shark can make the world feel temporarily much bigger and, somehow, simpler.
Wellness with a purpose
Nova's conservation efforts don't end when Project AWARE Week does. The resort maintains an active coral nursery containing hand-planted coral frames, with fragments transplanted onto its house reefs and monitored by the marine team as they grow.
The resort also works with organisations including the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme and Manta Trust, extending its marine conservation work throughout the year.
For guests, that means the opportunity to participate in something ongoing rather than simply ticking a sustainability activity off a holiday itinerary.
A different kind of wellness holiday
Perhaps the most compelling aspect of Project AWARE Week is that it doesn't ask travellers to choose between relaxation, fitness and purpose. You can spend the morning swimming through the Indian Ocean, the afternoon learning about coral restoration and the evening watching the sunset, all while knowing that your experience has contributed to a broader understanding of and commitment to the marine environment.

In a world where wellness can sometimes feel overly focused on optimisation, the ocean offers a different lesson: slow down, breathe, move and pay attention.
The ultimate wellness souvenir might not be a treatment, product or new routine, but the feeling of having connected with nature and helped protect it in the process.
Project AWARE Week runs from 16–20 September 2026 at Nova Maldives. Villa rates during the programme start from £339 per night on Full Board Plus.
